In March 2009, Rachel Shillcock joined the Rathbone centre in Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset. She completed the Entry to Employment (e2e) course at the centre and is now looking forward to a career as a fitness trainer.

Rachel faced many difficulties whilst growing up. She did not enjoy school and became a victim of bullying. Her rocky home life meant that, at 17, Rachel moved to supported housing. Eager to stay in education, Rachel joined a hair and beauty course at Weston College but struggled to settle in and decided to leave. Rachel was unable to find a job and became extremely unhappy.

Rachel then heard about Rathbone through a friend. Her first visit to the centre in North Somerset lifted a weight off Rachel’s shoulders. She said: “Straight away I felt this would be a great place to come and learn more”.

Entering a new environment is always challenging, but after her first week Rachel admits she felt right a home and made some friends for life. With the help of Rathbone, Rachel improved her key skills in numeracy and literacy and also gained employability skills.

Melanie White has been Rachel’s e2e tutor throughout her time at the centre, “Melanie has been there to support me all the way…to make me feel important and put a smile on my face” said Rachel.

Melanie said: "Rachel joined e2e with no confidence or self esteem; she was at a low point in her life. With 121's and lots of support and guidance Rachel has turned into a wonderful, fantastic student, who has so much energy and confidence. She’s gained knowledge, passion and drive. I am so proud of her".

Rachel crossed the finish line on 10th September and now, at the age of 18, has begun a work placement at a health club, training to become a fitness instructor.

Said Rachel: “If it wasn’t for Rathbone I would never have had the chance to become the person I am now. So thank you to Melanie and Rathbone - you are my life saver.”
